For the Love of 'Costume Drama'
I have recently been adding to my tear books, the physical version of this blog.
They are large portfolio books with clear plastic envelope pages, similar to the ones used for art and photography work. They are stuffed with editorials torn from magazines, adverts, postcards, newspaper clippings, photographs and random odd bits I have picked up – anything that I have liked, that sparked an idea or a character for a story, anything that made me feel creative.
I have been hoarding these bits and pieces for years, I never intentionally started to collect them but I think it came from wanting to hold on to an idea or even a feeling. I had them stored in bags but I began rationalising and organising them into these files so that I could easily look through them when I want to find visual stimulus for a film. You never know what might spark the imagination.
One of my absolute favourite collection of images are the ones below, they are from Love magazine, a bi-annual I now buy religiously as I can’t get enough of the fearless shoots, Katie Grand heads the magazine as editor in chief and often styles the stories.
These are taken from ‘Costume Drama’ issue 8 (2012) and feature some of the cast of Downton Abbey; Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil). Shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott & styled by Grand.
Looking through them last week reminded me how much I would love to direct a costume drama, with a twist.
